SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENTS

Protecting Today, Sustaining Tomorrow, Empowering Communities

At Tata Steel Minerals Canada, sustainability is more than a goal; it's a guiding principle in every aspect of our operations.

We are committed to responsible mining practices that safeguard the environment, respect Indigenous rights, and contribute to long-term community development

Health & Safety

SAFETY FIRST,
SAFETY ALWAYS

We Believe that a Safe Workplace is
The Only Workplace

We believe that a genuine culture of safety is the foundation for everything else; Efficiency, Reliability, & Sustainable Growth.

At Tata Steel Minerals Canada, protecting our people is not just one KPI among many; it is the KPI that gives meaning to all others. We know that only a safe workplace can truly be a productive workplace.

Awareness, Education & Compentency

Knowledge and competency are our first lines of defense. Every employee, contractor, and visitor receive comprehensive safety training before entering our sites, ensuring they know the rules and how to apply them in practice.

Learning doesn’t stop at orientation. Refresher courses, toolbox talks, and safety materials keep awareness high, while safety interactions, field-level risk assessments, and workplace inspections reinforce expectations on the ground. Together, these efforts build confidence and accountability in daily work.

We continually update our programs to reflect best practices, regulatory requirements, and lessons learned. The result is a workforce that doesn’t just learn about safety, it consistently demonstrates it.

Emergency Response Team

Even with the strongest planning and a skilled workforce, emergencies can still occur. Preparedness is therefore an essential part of our safety culture.

Our dedicated Emergency Response Team (ERT) includes trained firefighters and professional nurses, alongside other skilled responders. From medical incidents to fire and evacuation scenarios, the ERT is equipped and ready to act.

Regular drills and simulations ensure readiness under real-world conditions. With advanced equipment, on-site medical support, and close coordination with local authorities, we provide peace of mind that safety is never left to chance.

Safety, Award & Recognition

Recognizing and celebrating safe behavior is a cornerstone of our culture. By highlighting individuals and teams who demonstrate exceptional commitment to safety, we strengthen the message that safe work is valued, expected, and appreciated.

Recognition takes many forms, from acknowledging those who identify hazards and take corrective action, to celebrating leaders who set the standard through example, to highlighting innovations that make work safer for everyone. These acknowledgments not only reward the individuals involved, they also inspire others across the organization to strive for the same standard.

Through our approach to safety, awards, and recognition, we create a culture where safety is not just a rule to follow but a shared value. It becomes a source of pride, reinforcing our collective drive toward ensuring that safe choices are recognized as essential contributions to our sustainable success.

Environment

PROTECTING THE LAND, PRESERVING THE FUTURE

We believe that mining and environmental protection must go hand in hand. With operations in environmentally sensitive areas of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador, protecting the environment and contributing to the sustainable development of Canada's resources are key to our environmental objectives.

Environmental Impacts

We believe responsible mining means leaving a lighter footprint. We actively reduce dust, recycle water, and restore the land, ensuring that every step forward in production is also a step toward protecting the environment we all share.

Water Management
Water is life, and we treat it that way. By reusing process water, protecting rivers and lakes, and carefully monitoring quality, we safeguard this vital resource for our operations, our communities, and future generations.

Permitting and Assessments
Every project begins with listening and learning. Through rigorous environmental assessments and transparent permitting, we work hand-in-hand with regulators, Indigenous partners, and local communities to build trust and ensure that development is done responsibly.

Community Relations

Working Together for a Shared Future

Our philosophy follows Tata Group founder Jamsetji Tata’s vision that businesses should positively impact communities and society. True to this legacy, Tata Steel Minerals Canada is part of a group where 66% is owned by charitable trusts.

We are committed to supporting local communities and value our strong relationships with Aboriginal groups and other stakeholders.
